Many
people think that teachers are those that cannot 'do' what it is they
teach. This
is an unfortunate misconception. Teaching and learning go hand in hand. If
you are a keen learner you are likely to be a keen teacher also and it is not
something that you can switch on an off. It is a faculty that remains with you
all your life. It is a natural curiosity about the world.
The
'growth at all costs' national and global philosophy current among western
governments and business is flawed. Metaphorically, 'growth' becomes the vehicle
of obesity and disease. Rather, the notion that there is an optimum size for
nations, corporations, businesses and individuals is more apt and reflects
the disadvantages of 'over-growth'- dis-economies of scale, overcrowding,
over-work and stress.
21st
century business and social development will emphasise long -term planning -what
will the future look like in 20 years time if we do this now? -this is
compatible with sustainable development. Businesses and governments now consider
environmental costs that previously were excluded from economic accounting.
Personal and public morals are aligning. If you make a mess , you should clean
it up.
Business
philosophy and paradigms are also changing. Borrowed from warfare manuals, terms
like strategy, offensive, defensive, attack and retreat tactics are being
replaced by more traditional planning terminology that reflects the process of
sustainable business development rather than imperialistic and
nationalistic metaphors.
Finally,
markets are also changing and can change further. Markets can be rigid
imperialistic structures maintaining monopolies and narrow hierarchical power
bases. Energy and arms markets are like this. Markets can also be democratic,
reflecting the wishes of consumers. Democratic market power is the basis
for developing market economies in the21st century. Consumers and stakeholders
will not accept unrestrained corporate greed. The World Trade Organisation
[WTO] is slowly eroding the indiscriminate use of protectionist policies that
maintain an unsustainable, unhealthy and undemocratic status quo.

I have a belief in the role
of lowland woodlands and their part in landscape, amenity, and timber
production. This stems from my interests in walking in the landscape, production
of quality timber, and provision of habitat in areas where the local flora and
fauna are under pressure.
My
particular interest is in lowland forestry and the incorporation of
amenity with habitat and landscape. Practical work in formative and high
pruning, and surveying has enabled
me to view a great deal of differing woodlands, and varying management styles. Our
previous joinery company policy
was to use home-grown timber by selecting timber in the round before conversion
to company specification. This was dried in our own kiln.
The
English landscape is a product of centuries of policy and financial imperatives.
This transitory nature of the environment at large and the aggressive nature of
modern land-based technologies, means that country parks and other semi-natural
and wooded areas are increasingly important. The environmental, ecological,
recreational, landscape and amenity values are under pressure, and are a
resource not only for the country but can be seen as a contribution to part of
the environmental protection policies initiated at the Rio Earth Summit and
consolidated within Europe.
